Finding healthy foods for weight loss is easy. There are many websites which will give you various examples. But what they fail to do is to give you the reasons why these foods are healthy and why they promote weight loss.

There are also many websites which indicate various healthy foods as being responsible for weight gain. It is unclear where they find their information, but their logic is questionable.

It is pointless to simply limit your foods to those suggested unless you are well aware of why these foods are healthy and how much you need to eat or can eat while losing weight. Once you know the reasons, then many more foods with the same properties come into the picture. This is important not just for the sake of variety but also for your health. Different foods in the same category have different nutrients.

Lets look at citrus as an example. Some diet plans tell you to refrain from consuming orange juice. This is good advice if the orange juice is shop bought as this is so processed as to have little health promoting qualities. But it is lousy advise if you freshly squeeze organic oranges.

Organic oranges are high in vitamin C. This is a powerful antioxidant, providing the body with ways to prevent and combat infections and to scavenge free radicals, the cause of inflammation and other problems.

They are also high in phytonutrients, minerals, other vitamins and fibre. Orange coloured food is high in beta carotene, the precurser to vitamin A. This is essential for good eye and vision health as well as preventing problems from excess sunshine.

Organic oranges are high in calcium and potassium, both macro minerals required in large amounts for a healthy body. They are high in the vitamin B complex, absolutely essential for a healthy and trim physique. The natural fibre promotes healthy elimination, preventing sluggish bowels which are the main cause of colon cancers.

By avoiding oranges, you may seriously impair your nutrient intake, and so your health.

But why limit your citrus experience to oranges? Lemons have a very high alkalinity. It is only when you are acid that disease can occur. Lemons assist digestion in all its forms. It purifies and improves the health of the liver and the kidneys.

Grapefruit is well known in the dieting industry for its ability to absorb and reduce the starch and sugar accumulations in the body. Grapefruit has all the benefits of the orange and many of the lemon. Grapefruit also has the ability to prevent some medical drugs from working. This means that some doctors will tell you grapefruit causes toxicity, whereas it is actually the medication.

There are also limes and various citrus hybrids, which also have high beneficial and health promoting qualities.
